Building on the success of the regional healthcare initiative of The Economist Group, Healthcare in China 2012 will gather policymakers, regulators, heads of private-sector businesses and multilaterals, and leading academics from within the country and across the region to explore the most pressing healthcare issues in China.

Great progress has been made through the latest health reforms in China. The country is addressing its healthcare infrastructure with a new sense of resolve, and the social safety net is starting to take shape. However, with a severe shortage of professional care providers, a stark imbalance between urban and rural health insurance schemes, and a lack of clarity on new revenue models for providers, questions are arising about how China will achieve the goals of its health reforms.

Critical issues to be discussed include:

    - How should the government tackle the critical challenges in health care reforms?

    - What role should the private sector play in the reforms?

    - How can the social security net be widened to ease patients’ financial burden?

    - How can public-private partnerships help improve health quality, particularly in rural areas?

    - How should the government deal with the pandemic of chronic diseases that are becoming a threat to economic development?
