The State Development and Reform Commission announced on September 28 
its official decision to cut prices on 22 major drug products, most of which
are antibiotics.

The average price reduction on these products is around 40%, while the biggest 
cut is as high as 63%.  SDRC estimates that patients can have an annual saving
of RMB 4 billion as a result of the price cut.

SDRC was under severe attack from 13 pharmaceutical industry associations earlier 
this year when it initially proposed 60 to 90% price reductions on these
products.  

The present price reduction ismuch lower than what was previously proposed due to
pressure from the pharmaceutical industry.

Local companies are also complaining about SDRC's discrimination of local products, 
as prices of products of multinationals were reduced by only around 20% in comparison 
with an average of 40% on products of local companies.
