Coverage of Basic Medical Insurance System Continues to Expand

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security recently reported that the coverage of the urban employee basic medical insurance system has been broadening, and the total number of participants by the end of June, 2005 reached 130,330,000 people, an increase of 6,290,000 from the number at the end of 2004. The total income of the basic medical insurance fund in the first half of 2005 was RMB 63.5 billion, up by 27.5%, while total expenditures was RMB 48.8 billion, up by 27.4%.
In addition, the coverage of the national occupational insurance system also expanded to 73,020,000 people at the end of June, 2005, up by 4,570,000 people compared with the figure at the end of 2004. The national maternity insurance system covered 45,790,000 people at the end of June 2005, up by 1,950,000 people compared with the same figure at the end of 2004.
