Chinese drugmaker to produce Tamiflu 12/16/2005
The spread of bird flu is lifting demand of related drugs. After a month of negotiation, the Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group has received permission from the Swiss-based Roche Group to produce Tamiflu.

Shanghai Pharmaceutical says it will try to get the drug into mass production within six months. Tamiflu is a registered trademark in China, so the company will not use the name but product quality will be the same as Tamiflu, and at a lower price. Tamiflu is the only drug now recognized by the World Health Organization for bird flu prevention. Roche had previously come under criticism for not sharing its formula, or granting permission to others to meet global demand for the drug.
